IDF Aid to Japan

Japan Delegation Last week Lt. Col. Dr. Eric Setton, Chief Liaison Officer of the Israeli Defense Force contacted me. He said he was preparing a military aid delegation leaving for Japan. He asked “Light and Mercy” for help in purchasing specific items needed for this mission. Through G-d’s help and the generosity of an international Christian aid organization, I was able to purchase 200,000 shekels of needed articles for 100,000 shekels. It is a humbling privilege to bless the IDF in setting up clinics throughout Japan. Below are some items we purchased to help them stay warm, dry and provide some comfort.

Amazingly, the portion of the Torah that was read in the synagogues this past week coincides with the Israeli mission to Japan. In the portion read, the Torah specifies which birds may, or may not, be eaten. Each bird forbidden for us to eat has a negative character trait. Yet we are forbidden to eat the stork, so kind and generous that her Hebrew name is "Chasidah", the pious one. Why are we forbidden to eat such a bird? Long ago it was recognized that the stork, although kind and generous to those in her species, is indifferent and cruel to birds outside her flock.

Hashem aspires for us to be loving, helpful and encouraging to every nation - to do what we can to aid all mankind. So it is with great pride that I, along with all of Israel, send off the medical aid delegation to Japan. It is a difficult mission. The extent of human suffering is immense, but we are hopeful that G-d will enable the Israeli delegation to heal, encourage, and help the nation of Japan.

This morning, Monday, the IDF delegation to Japan opened a clinic for the earthquake/tsunami victims in Sarenko in the Miyagi District and held an initial assessment. Among thousands of homeless following the earthquake/tsunami, the mission began deployment of an a clinic with an X-ray room, a children's ward, operating rooms and other critical needs departments. The delegation today joined with other volunteers serving as Hebrew-speaking Japanese interpreters. At the same time work is being conducted at the clinic, the Medical Corps is monitoring radiation levels in order to ensure that no member of the delegation is in any health danger.

We would be deeply grateful for your remembering "Light and Mercy" to help us underwrite the huge deficit we have encountered by assisting in this holy work of G-d.

Thank you for your help and support!
We thank G-d for you.
